Minimising New Zealand's Waste
Following an implementation review of the Waste Minimisation Act 2008, which was enacted for the purpose of encouraging waste minimisation and decreasing waste disposal, the Government has confirmed plans to increase and expand the waste disposal levy (“Levy”). This move is intended, amongst other things, to encourage New Zealander’s to recover, recycle and reuse valuable waste resources.
Over the next four years, the Levy rate for municipal landfills will progressively increase from $10 to $60 per tonne. The first of these increases is effective on 1 July 2021 and will see the Levy increase from the current rate of $10 per tonne to $20 per tonne. From July 2022 the Waste Levy will expand to cover additional landfill types, including construction and demolition fills. The Government is currently developing a strategy on how it intends to invest the increased revenue received from the Levy.
